Laura Thipphawong
Laura Thipphawong is a Toronto-based contemporary artist, writer, and historian whose surreal, narrative oil paintings and drawings are steeped in research and symbolism. A self-taught painter since the age of twelve, she moved from small-town northern Ontario to Toronto to pursue the arts, later earning a medal and Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Critical Studies from OCAD University and a Master of Arts in Art History from the University of Toronto. Drawing from folklore, literature, history, science, and psychoanalysis, Laura builds highly detailed, dream-like compositions that act as symbolic stories, exploring existential questions, perception, and the charged relationship between self and other. Her work often reconciles oppositional elements and leans into emotional ambiguity, lingering in the unsettling spaces between good and evil, predator and prey, beauty and the grotesque, treating the psyche itself as her most enduring subject.
